Sun, Shade and Goths with Jane Wilkes

In our last blog post we showed you a rare Goth in the wild and we thought we would do it again! So this time we sent our photographer to the beach to scout out any Goths in the tall grass. Sadly there was no tall grass but we did find Jane in the shade and she happily obliged.

Q: Thank you Jane for volunteering to shoot with us, do you mind if we ask you a couple of questions for blog?

A: Of course not go ahead!

What was your first exposure to the goth genre and scene?

A: I was darkly inclined, even as a child! In 1973 I got the comic Shiver and Shake and in 1978 progressed to Misty (a spooky comic for girls) I also was a big fan of old B&W horror movies on TV and read all the Pan Book of Horrors I could get my hands on! It wasn’t until I discovered Siouxsie, The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen and the Damned that my love of non-classical dark music was born and from there onwards it was Goth music all the way.

Q: You have your own youtube channel where you post videos from makeup to gardening, what first inspired you to start your channel?

A: I originally started my YT channel to show everyone that you can run through cancer! Then I wanted something to do while I was getting through Chemo and then when I was off after my hip replacement surgery…..I’ve come a long way since then and it’s taken me a while but I think I have found my groove.

Q: how has your personal style evolved over time?

A:  My personal style has evolved as I have been fatter, thinner, balder etc! My makeup has also evolved as I have discovered that there are other people online from whom I can learn and many, many products to covet!

Q: which of our Gothx bags is your favourite?

A:  So many of the Gothx bags are ones I would love to own: The Book of Spells, the coffin bag, all the ball-clip granny bags and pretty much all the clutch/makeup bags too – can’t get enough of them

Q: you mentioned you've get many requests to be people's Goth Granny, do you have any snippets of wisdom to impart to the younger goth community?

A:  My advice to the younger generation is always to be yourself, do no harm, learn constantly (there is so much literature out there which is seminal reading for Goths) and don’t try to buy an image; have your own image of yourself and make it as you go – I am a great one for charity shop make-overs and up-cycling things as well as making my own jewellery.

Q: And finally, you're stuck on a desert island with a solar powered record player, which 3 albums would you take to listen to?

A:  Gosh only 3 albums!!! Would have to be Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin, Earth Inferno by Fields of the Nephilim and The Planets by Gustav Holst.
